TOOTH PAIN AFTER FILLING

TOOTH PAIN AFTER FILLINGintra-oral

It is not uncommon for teeth to be sensitive to pressure, air, sweet foods, or temperature following the placement of a filling. Normally the sensitivity goes away within a few weeks, but while your teeth are still feeling sensitive, try to avoid those things that are causing the sensitivity.

If the tooth pain doesn’t subside within two to four weeks, or if your teeth are really sensitive, make sure you contact your dentist. Your dentist will probably suggest you use desensitizing toothpaste or apply a desensitizing agent to the tooth, or possibly suggest a root canal procedure.

There are other common types of sensitivity once the tooth is filled:

a) Pain around your fillings.  If you experience this type of pain you may want to see your dentist again because there’s a chance the tooth was not properly repaired.

b) Pain when you bite. The pain is noticed immediately after the anesthesia wears off, and it may continue over time. This usually happens because the filling is interfering with your bite, and you’ll need to contact your dentist and have the filling reshaped.

c) Pain when your teeth touch. The pain is likely caused by the touching of two different metal surfaces such as the silver amalgam in a newly filled tooth and a silver crown on another tooth. This pain should resolve itself within a short period of time, but if it’s persistent, you’ll need to see a doctor again.

d) A toothache: Unfortunately, if the decay to the pulp of the tooth was very deep, this type of pain may indicate that this tissue is no longer healthy, and you may have to get a root canal treatment for it.

e) Referred pain: In this type of pain, you experience pain or sensitivity in other teeth besides the one that received the filling. In this case, there is likely nothing wrong with your teeth and the pain will probably go away on its own.

f) Allergic reactions to silver fillings. In these rare circumstances, mercury or one of the metals used in the filling causes the allergic response. Symptoms of amalgam allergy are similar to those experienced in a typical skin allergy, and include skin rashes and itching. The best solution to this is to ask to have the filling replaced with a composite type of filling.

How To Prevent Sensitive Tooth

SENSITIVE TEETHsensitive_tooth

Hypersensitivity affects 45 million adults in the United States, and 10 million are chronically affected with sensitive teeth. Tooth sensitivity is tooth discomfort after eating cold or hot foods or liquids, or even breathing cold air.

This problem often happens when gums recede and/or cementum is not presence. Gum tissue acts like a protective blanket to cover the roots of the teeth, but as the gums recede the underlying tooth roots are exposed. Thousands of tiny dentinal tubules (channels) leading to the tooth’s never center (pulp) are than exposed. These tubules allow more stimuli like heat, cold or pressure to reach the nerve in the tooth and you feel pain.

Tooth sensitivity is caused by a number of factors: brushing to hard or with too much pressure, which removes gum tissue. Two out of three people brush too hard.

Using a hard tooth brush instead of a soft one.

Poor oral hygiene, which leads to plaque build-up around the teeth and gums. This plaque hardens into tartar. The bacteria that live in plaque cause gum disease and gum recession. The exposed roots contain small pores or tubules, which lead directly to the nerve of the tooth. Pain, pressure and cold stimuli can travel down the tubules and trigger the tooth nerve, causing pain and discomfort.

Long-term use of mouthwashes such as Listerine or Oraldene damage dentine and cause dentin sensitivity, and reverse the beneficial effects of toothpaste.

Root sensitivity can occur after having your teeth cleaned, following root planning, crown placement, or even having fillings.  The good news is this sensitivity will disappear in about four to six weeks.

Decreased saliva flow: a simple test is to invert the lower lip, dry off the mucous membrane and see how long it takes for small droplets of saliva to flow from the minor salivary glands. If it takes more than a minute, the saliva flow is down.

The key to preventing tooth sensitivity is to keep your gums healthy by reducing the pressure you use while brushing, using a soft toothbrush, and maintaining good oral health habits.  This means brushing all your teeth for 2-3 minutes, not the usual 30-45 seconds that most people brush. Flossing is also crucial in order to reach the 35 percent of the tooth surfaces where brushing can not reach.

What to you once you already have sensitive teeth: Use a toothpaste for sensitivity. They work in a cumulative fashion to cover the open tubules. They contain strontium chloride and/or potassium nitrate, which act to remineralize the tooth surface by diffusing into the open pores (tubules) on the enamel. This process helps block transmission of sensation from the tooth surface to the tooth nerve. They need to be used four to six weeks before any changes can be noted.

Continue to practice brushing gently and carefully around the gumline, so you do not remove more gum tissue or continue to demineralize the tooth surface. Avoid highly acidic foods like citrus or soda pop that can work against the sensitivity toothpaste. Brush gently with a soft toothbrush twice/day, using a low abrasion desensitizing toothpaste. Use fluoride mouth rinse to help remineralize the tooth surface. Fluoride gels and varnish are also effective.

Don’t use a tartar control toothpaste, use a fluoridated toothpaste or desensitizing toothpaste. Try spreading a thin layer of desensitizing toothpaste on the exposed roots with your finger or a Q-tip before you go to bed.

Avoiding very cold foods. Monitor your intake of fruit drinks or sports drinks that are high in sugar and/or acid; as well as tomatoes, pickles, citrus, soda, and tea.

Dental Jokes

1) THE FUNNY SIDE OF DENTISTRY

A woman and her husband interrupted their vacation to go to the dentist. “I want a tooth pulled, and I don’t want Novacaine because I’m in a big hurry,” the woman said. “Just extract the tooth as quickly as possible, and we’ll be on our way.” The dentist was quite impressed. “You’re certainly a courageous woman,” he said. “Which tooth is it?” The woman turned to her husband and said, “Show him your tooth, dear.”

A patient sits in the dental chair with severely fractured front teeth. After discussing how they will be restored and what the fee would be the patient says, “Before we begin, Doc, I gotta know: Will I be able to play the trumpet when you are finished?”

The dentist says, “Sure you will!”

The patient replies, “Great, I couldn’t play a note before!”

“Now, young man,” asked the dentist, “what kind of filling would you like for that tooth?”

“Chocolate, please,” replied the youngster.

Last week Grace went to the dentist’s office for a checkup and music was playing.

She was early for her appointment, but after waiting ten minutes, an elderly woman sitting beside her said, “isn’t that just like a dentist? A waiting room jammed with people, and the dentist is in there playing the piano.”

——————————————————————————–

A woman phoned her dentist when she received a huge bill. “I’m shocked!” she complained. “This is three times what you normally charge.”

“Yes, I know,” said the dentist. “But you yelled so loud, you scared away two other patients.”

——————————————————————————–

“Open wider,” requested the dentist, as he began his examination of the patient. “Good God !” he said startled. “You’ve got the biggest cavity I’ve ever seen - the biggest cavity I’ve ever seen.” “OK Doc!” replied the patient. “I’m scared enough without you saying something like that twice.”

“I didn’t!” said the dentist. “That was the echo.”

A young man saw an elderly couple sitting down to lunch at McDonald’s. He noticed that they had ordered one meal, and an extra drink cup. As he watched, the gentleman carefully divided the hamburger in half, then counted out the fries, one for him, one for her, until each had half of them. Then he poured half of the soft drink into the extra cup and set that in front of his wife. The old man then began to eat, and his wife sat watching, with her hands folded in her lap. The young man decided to ask if they would allow him to purchase another meal for them so that they didn’t have to split theirs.

Said the old gentleman, “Oh no. We’ve been married 50 years, and everything has always been and will always be shared, 50/50.”

The young man then asked the wife if she was going to eat, and she replied, “Not yet…It’s his turn with the teeth!”

When a new dentist set up in a small town, he quickly acquired a reputation of being the latest kind of “Painless” dentist.

But a local lad quickly disputed this. “He’s a fake!” he told his mates. “He’s not painless at all. When he stuck his finger in my mouth I bit him - and he yelled like anyone else.”

A man went to his dentist because he feels something wrong in his mouth. The dentist examines him and says, “that new upper plate I put in for you six months ago is eroding. What have you been eating?”

The man replies, “all I can think of is that about four months ago my wife made some asparagus and put some stuff on it that was

delicious…Hollandaise sauce. I loved it so much I now put it on everything — meat, toast, fish, vegetables, everything.”

“Well,” says the dentist, “that’s probably the problem. Hollandaise sauce is made with lots of lemon juice, which is highly corrosive. It’s eaten away your upper plate. I’ll make you a new plate, and this time use chrome.”

“Why chrome?” asks the patient.

To which the dentist replies, “It’s simple. Everyone knows that there’s no plate like chrome for the Hollandaise!”

While I was waiting to see the dentist, a woman came out of his inner office smiling. Nodding to me, she said, “Thank goodness my work is completed. I’m so glad to have found a painless dentist and one who’s so gentle and understanding too.”

Seated in the dentist chair, I related the incident to the doctor. He laughed and said, “Oh, that was just my Mother.”

——————————————————————————–

A particularly voluptuous lady entered the dentists surgery in an obvious state of agitation. The dentist tried to calm her down assuring her that he would do nothing to hurt her. She sat down in the chair and started fidgeting nervously as the dentist began sterilizing all the required equipment. When he asked her to open her mouth, she s creamed. So he tried to calm her down again even though he was losing patience. Almost immediately, the lady threw a hysterical fit, then realizing that the dentist had begun glaring at her, said, “Oh doctor, I’m so nervous. I hate dentists. Why, I think I’d rather have a baby than have a tooth drilled.”

Replied the dentist, “Well miss, better make up your mind fast, so I can adjust the chair accordingly.”

Patient: How much to have this tooth pulled?

Dentist: $200

Patient: $200 for just a few minutes work???

Dentist: I can extract it very slowly, if you like.

BRACES FOR KIDS

BRACES FOR KIDS

images-1

Lots of kids don’t have perfect teeth, so don’t worry if yours aren’t straight. Take a look at most of your classmates. Many of them probably don’t have straight teeth either. Sometimes teeth just don’t grow in evenly.

Your teeth might be crooked, or your upper and lower jaws might not be the same size. If your upper jaw is bigger than your lower jaw, that’s called an overbite. If your lower jaw is bigger than your upper jaw, you have an underbite.

Either way it’s called malocclusion (pronounced mal-uh-kloo-zhun), a word that comes from Latin and means “bad bite.” Malocclusion is just a word that dentists use to describe the shape of your mouth.

There are different types of braces, and today braces are much less noticeable than years past. Metal braces are still used, but you might be able to get clear braces or braces that are the same color as your teeth. There are even braces that go behind your teeth where no one can see them.

The wires that are used in braces today are also smaller and better than they used to be, and they’re made of a space-age material that straightens your teeth faster and easier. The rubber bands that go along with braces come in funky colors now, too.

Braces straighten teeth by putting steady pressure on your teeth, and by staying in place for a certain amount of time. Most kids just need regular braces with wires and rubber bands doing their jobs to keep pressure on the teeth. The wires on your braces help to move your teeth, and the rubber bands help to correct the alignment. If your teeth need extra help, you may have to wear head or neck gear with wires attached to your teeth, usually at night.

Everyone has to wear braces for different lengths of time, but most people usually wear braces for about two years. Afterward, you may need to wear a retainer, which is a small, hard piece of plastic with metal wires or a thin piece of plastic shaped like a mouth guard. Retainers make sure your teeth don’t go wandering back to their original places. Your retainer will be specially molded to fit your newly straightened teeth.

While all the hardware is  on, you are much more susceptible to decay so keep it all clean. Many people will wear flouride trays to prevent decay.

The length of time needed to wear the retainer varies: you might have to wear it all day and night for two years, you might have to wear it at night for 6 months, or you might have to wear it every other night for many years. It depends on your teeth.

GUM DISEASE, WHY WORRY?

GUM DISEASE, WHY WORRY?

images

By age 35, three out of four adults develop some form of gum disease. Gum disease can occur at any age, but recent studies indicate a greater risk after age 35. This insidious disease is painless, but if untreated will destroy the gums and bone surrounding your teeth and may eventually lead to tooth loss.

How can you avoid gum disease and its unpleasant consequences? Exercise good judgment — brush properly and floss every day. Also, see your dentist for regular cleanings. If periodontal disease is treated in the early stages, many times the damage can be reversed.

There are two stages of gum disease, gingivitis and periodontitis. The first is an inflammation of the gums caused by bacteria in plaque. The gums become red, swollen and bleed upon brushing. Normal bacteria in the mouth form a thin film of plaque continuously on tooth surfaces. It’s that sticky feeling on your teeth when you wake up in the morning. If plaque is not removed every day, it eventually hardens into calculus (tartar). Once calculus forms it can only be removed by your dentist or hygienist with special instruments.

If not corrected, gingivitis can progress into periodontitis. Periodontitis is a low-grade infection of the gums. Bacteria in the calculus produce waste products which create toxins and volatile sulfur compounds. Toxins destroy the bone and gums around the teeth leading to the development of a periodontal pocket. A pocket is an abnormal deepening of the natural crevice or space between the teeth and gums. These spaces or crevices in healthy gums are normally 1 to 3mm deep. Periodontal pockets are a perfect environment for infection, and if left untreated, will painlessly progress deeper and deeper. If the pocket progresses beyond the normal depth of 3mm and reaches a depth of 5mm, it is known as moderate periodontal disease. The volatile sulfur compounds produced by the bacteria are the leading cause of bad breath.

Even teeth that look healthy can be hiding pockets where bone is being destroyed. To evaluate for hidden gum disease your dentist will recommend x-rays and periodontal probing. The periodontal probe is a special instrument for measuring the pocket depth around each tooth.

If periodontitis is not treated, it will slowly and painlessly destroy the bone which supports the teeth. Untreated, the disease will eventually cause tooth loss. But early detection of gum disease, good professional care, and proper oral hygiene will guarantee a lifetime of healthy teeth and a great smile.

Can baby teeth save lives? - DentalProductsReport.com

stemHave any of your patients ever told you or your staff about one of their young children suffering from a chronic or even debilitating disease? Up until now most dentists and practice staff could only listen, empathize, and perhaps suggest a doctor they knew or a new treatment they had read about.

However, a discovery in 2003 led by researcher Dr. Songtao Shi at the National Institute of Health and a new business that has sprung up around his discovery have changed the role dentists can play toward helping patients one day find a solution for loved ones suffering from serious health problems such as stroke, heart disease, diabetes, spinal cord damage, or even neurological disorders such as Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s disease.

Stem cells in baby teeth

The discovery that baby teeth harbor collectible or useful, regenerative stem cells within the dental pulp by Dr. Shi six years ago is bringing dentistry to the forefront of a new frontier of “biodentistry” and has spurred the opening of companies worldwide that collect and store these stem cells until they may be needed by the patient or the patient’s immediate family at some future date.

BioEDEN, an FDA-registered facility headquartered in Austin, Tex. with branches in Manchester, England and in Thailand, was the first company to make available a baby tooth stem cell bank in 2006. “We currently have more than 2,000 samples stored worldwide,” said Jeff Johnson Director of Operations.

Even though no stem cells from baby teeth have yet been used to treat a human, research is making rapid advancements in medical trials taking place in around the world. What researchers have found, Johnson said, is that the mesenchymal stem cells contained in dental pulp are functionally identical to the mesenchymal stem cells taken from bone marrow.

“That’s exciting because bone marrow stem cells have been used for years in clinical therapies to treat serious diseases,” he said. “In the minds of most researchers, it is widely recognized that stem cells will be the future of medicine. And the fact that we can collect stem cells from primary teeth provides a non-invasive, non-controversial source that is available to everyone.”

Research continues on the viability of extracting stem cells from adult teeth. What BioEDEN has learned is that young adult wisdom teeth contain the same viable stem cells as those found in primary teeth. However, once we are past a certain age and BioEDEN is working on determining what that age is the viability of the stem cells decreases.

Johnson said that what makes stem cells extracted from teeth so remarkable is that they can be grown in culture and can be expanded to therapeutic levels and still maintain their therapeutic potential. This means that each stem cell collected can grow into millions and millions of viable cells. Unlike other sources of stem cells, this ability provides enough material for many treatments, perhaps over a lifetime
